Organic Silk

JACOLI is enabled to market organic silk with GOTS certification, along with OEKO-TEX.

This biodegradable, eco-friendly, and organic fiber undergoes a production process that is free from CO2 emissions. It is ethically and responsibly produced, without the use of toxic agricultural substances or chemicals. Organic silk production requires low water and energy consumption. It also generates minimal waste, and any leftovers are reused and resold.

Products marketed by JACOLI:

JACOLI offers yarns (filament or ring-spun) in 100% silk or blends of silk with other raw materials such as linen, cotton, Lyocell/Tencel, Modal, polyester, or collagen. These same blends can be used for fabrics and knits, which JACOLI can market in different weights, widths, technical configurations, or stitch types.

Curiosity about Organic Silk production:

Organic silk follows the same production process as conventional silk, with the only difference being that the silkworms are fed with mulberry leaves from organic farming. This means that the trees are treated without the use of chemical products or treatments with insecticides, pesticides, or synthetic fertilizers.

When the cocoon is ready, it is removed from the trees and left to dry. Afterward, it undergoes a type of cooking process where the larva inside the cocoon dies, similar to conventional silk production. However, the final process of organic silk can be different if the customer desires. It is possible to remove the larva from the cocoon before cooking, which results in waste and lower quality silk compared to conventional silk since the cocoon is cut so that the larva can emerge alive.

Benefits of Organic Silk:

  • Lightweight and durable;

  • Hypoallergenic;

  • Radiant shine (although when blended with another fiber, the resulting fabric may lose some shine);

  • Thermoregulates body temperature (keeping the body cool in summer and warm in winter);

  • Accepts dyes well;

  • Rich in essential amino acids and natural proteins, allowing the skin and the fabric to breathe in total harmony;

  • Antiseptic;

  • Anti-inflammatory;

  • The process of organic silk can be sustainable.
